Share the feed ration out over several meals (preferably 3 meals a day).
Distribute the meal in the following order: water, then forage, then formulated feeds or cereals.
Whenever the ration is modified (quantity or quality) always introduce the change gradually (over a week).
Always feed your horses at regular times.
The ration must include forage for an adequate intake of raw fibre (check the quality of your fodder: storage, mould and dust).
Increase the intake of forage if you use artificial bedding (wood shavings, flax, paper, or peat).
Complete the horse’s intake with a ration of dry matter equivalent to 2% of his body weight, i.e. about 7 to 8 kg of dry matter for a horse weighing 450kg (maintenance, light work).
Leave a salt block freely available at all times.
Make sure the horse has a constant supply of clean drinking water: 15 to 50 litres a day depending on the temperature and physical effort.
Worm your horses regularly.
Keep an eye on the condition of your horse’s teeth.
Check that your horse eats his food properly (make sure he isn’t sorting or refusing it etc).
Feed must always be kept in a cool, dark and dry place, in a closed room protected from rodents.
